Negotiation Skills: To Get a Yes, You Have to Ask

Never be afraid of asking for something in negotiation or in other areas of life. You won't ever get what you want unless you do.

A friend of mine recently applied for a job that was her dream job. She didn't have all the qualifications they were asking for and she knew it was a long shot, but she applied anyway. Her view was that if she didn't apply they wouldn't have anything to say yes to. I was impressed by her positive take on it. Many of us in the same position wouldn't have bothered applying, thinking that they would only get rejected anyway. You never know unless you try, and even with a long shot there is always a chance of a yes. The important thing to remember is that you have to ask, so that the other person has a chance to say yes.

Negotiation Coaching

Rather than fearing a no, change your perspective to that of giving people the opportunity to give you a yes. You never know what possibilities there are unless you try. Perhaps you won't get the job you applied for, but they might offer you another one that is just right for you instead, just because you gave them the opportunity of meeting you. Ask and allow a yes to come your way.

Negotiation Coaching Question

Are you asking so that you can get a yes?

Daily Action

Practice giving others the chance to say yes. Ask for what you want. You usually have a 50/50 chance of getting it, which are really good odds - especially compared to the 0% chance when you don't ask!

"If there is something to gain and nothing to lose by asking, by all means ask!" W. Clement Stone
