Basic Negotiation Skills Training
Due to chance or circumstance, countless business professionals have
found themselves in negotiation situations almost by pure accident.
Projects, meetings or transactions that appeared to be going smoothly
suddenly took a turn for the worse and led to long, protracted
negotiation discussions. Some people have the natural instincts to work
their way out of such tenuous situations; however, most of us require
added coaching and training to hone the appropriate skills to negotiate
effectively. Without the ability to understand all the subtle nuances of
a negotiation, we run the risk of giving away far more than we would’ve
had we taken the time to prepare. Our Basic Negotiation Skills Training
workshop is designed to equip both new and experienced negotiators with
the key concepts and training methodologies required to handle nearly
any negotiation with ease and comfort.
Even though many “accidental” negotiators may have enjoyed a
certain level of success in the past, those who have not taken the
appropriate training to sharpen their negotiation skills run the risk of
eventually finding themselves in a situation they cannot handle. Our
one-day Basic Negotiation Skills Training program will empower
participants with skills to approach even the most complex and drawn-out
negotiation situations. We utilize proven principles and skills that
lead to greater success at the negotiation table. Participants are
taught how to focus on common interests, build relationships, overcome
dirty negotiation tricks and come to agreement in an ethical manner.
Basic Negotiations Skills Training is an interactive workshop that
utilizes role playing, personal assessments, group exercises,
discussions and training modules to reinforce the learning process.
Individual experiences and negotiation discussions enable participants
to feed off of personal situations and understand how to best approach
difficult and unexpected situations.
Basic Negotiation Skills Training participants will learn to:
- Prepare for negotiations, even when they are not anticipated or
planned
- Handle face-to-face or telephone negotiations more effectively
- Minimize conflict and roadblocks to agreement via principled
negotiation skills
- Understand the needs of different negotiating types
- Establish rapport and build chemistry
- Place greater emphasis on planning and strategy prior to
negotiation meetings
- Focus on interests and issues that lead to common agreement
- Work with a common negotiation language to increase personal
effectiveness
- Apply questioning skills to determine attitudes, situations and
priorities
- Adjust their negotiations approach based on verbal cues and
behavior
- Identify areas of concern and recommend appropriate solutions
- Utilize new skills to recognize and disarm dishonest negotiations
tactics
- Handle negotiations in a manner that strengthens relationships
